Research and TechnologyMuch of our global quest for advanced materials takes place at Inco Technical Services Limited (ITSL) at the Sheridan Park research community in Mississauga, Ontario. The technology center was opened in 1965 as the J. Roy Gordon Research Laboratory and expanded in 1990 to house exploration and engineering sections as well as a larger research department. To date, Sheridan Park has obtained some 1800 patents. ITSL's product research team members are involved in all stages of new product development – from conceptual exploratory research, through bench-top and mini-plant scales to the scale-up and design of commercial equipment. The group plays a key role in commissioning plants using laboratory-developed technologies, trouble shooting and assisting marketing and sales employees by evaluating other technologies and products. ITSL also has special expertise in the science of vapor deposition using nickel carbonyl gas to make metallic nickel in a variety of sizes and shapes producing special products with unique properties. While concentrating primarily on the energy and powder metallurgy markets, ITSL continues to expand beyond these traditional areas.
